After delivering the baby the most important thing that the mother needs to do is breastfeeding. This is a mandatory thing because the baby is not supposed to have anything else apart from breast milk at least for 6 months.

But it is also said that breastfeeding helps you lose weight. In fact, it is said to be the best way to lose weight after having the baby. But yes, the time that is required to reduce that postpartum weight can vary from one woman to another but when one is breastfeeding, the process can speed up a little bit.

While breastfeeding, the mothers keep burning more calories than otherwise in their regular lives. There have been many medical studies that have shown that when the mother is bread feeding they tend to lose at least 500 calories more on an average basis which is almost equivalent to cutting down on a large snack or doing 30 minutes of physical exercise.

Also, the mothers who are nursing their babies are also very conscious of what they eat (because it can indirectly affect the baby). This can also lead to weight loss because there is a lower intake of fried, oily and processed food and there is also a high intake of vegetables, fiber-filled fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Both of these together can initiate the weight loss process much faster.

Breastfeeding Weight Loss

According to many studies, there is seen that women who have breastfed their child for at least 3 to 4 months have lost almost 1.5 kgs of weight as compared to women who have not done it. in fact, some women also go back to their pre-pregnancy weight when they start breastfeeding their child. This can be achieved if they have breastfed their child for at least 6 months.

Not only that, but breastfeeding is also said to have some very long term positive effects on body weight. If a woman breastfeeds their child for 6 to 12 months then they can lower their overall body fat percentage as well. If the breastfeeding process continues for more than 12 weeks then the average weight loss is about 3.5 kgs and if the breastfeeding is less than 12 weeks then it is around 2.5 kgs. Thus the average weight loss actually depends on the duration of breastfeeding.

So, when it comes to breastfeeding weight loss before and after then one needs to know that 3 to 6 months of breastfeeding can help a lot in reducing weight than that of formula feeding. Also, this breastfeeding has a lasting effect on body weight.

But there are certain exceptions as well. There are some nursing mothers who take more time losing weight after baby delivery even if they are breastfeeding. In most cases, the reason is binge eating. As breastfeeding induces hunger, they cannot control their diet and hence the weight loss takes more time.
